Although it seems like ages ago, we are now rapidly approaching the 5 year anniversary of the formation of the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan Assocition. On December 9, 1995, a bitter cold and snowy day for those who remember, fifty-nine Ko Dan Ja, studio owners and Dans under Kwan Jang Nim Ferraro gathered at the West Haven Dojang for a momentous occasion, one that would impact the future for thousands of martial artists.

The morning began with an auspicous address from Kwan Jang Nim Charles Ferraro. He explained where we had been, where we were heading, what he envisioned and the options we had to get there. To make this effort totally democratic, shortly thereafter, Kwan Jang Nim Ferraro left the meeting. The decisions we made that day ultimately forged this organization.

The day was extremely long, over 13 hours, and the decision-making processes were arduous. Our focus was to make decisions in the best interests of our membership, students and lastly ourselves. We set out to create an organization that would first serve its membership. We voted on everything from membership fees, to services, to patch designs, right down to the name of the organization. We also selected our inaugural Board of Directors and scheduled our first Board Meeting. The details of the meeting are endless, but the minutes are available if anyone is interested.

The day ended on a high note when just after 10:00 p.m., 13 hours from our morning start, Kwan Jang Nim returned to the dojang and was greeted with a rousing "Kwan Jang Nim, Kay Kyung Ret" for the first time. We explained that we had unanimously voted to form the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan Association, with him as it's president.

Here we are 5 years later, just finishing our 10th Dan Classing, and approaching our 5th Ko Dan Ja Classing. We have held 5 National Championships, which were open to Tang Soo Do practitioners of all organizations, including our last one held in Orlando, Florida. The Mi Guk Kwan Association now has over 40 studios across America, over 40 Ko Dan Ja, over 850 Dans and more than 4000 members.

I would like to take this time to recognize the "Charter Members" of our organization, who were present at that historic meeting and who resolved that the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan Association would grow to what it is today:.
